BUYER BRIEF

Are robot vacuums banned in the US? What buyers should check

The July FCC restriction, existing models and the October trade announcement answer different questions.

Can I still buy a robot vacuum?

The FCC added foreign-produced advanced robotic devices to its Covered List on July 28. Covered devices cannot receive new equipment authorizations unless an exception applies. That is not a recall of every vacuum already in a home. Matic says its current model was already authorized and did not need its later exemption to stay on sale. Check the exact model and authorization history, not just the brand name.

Did the October 28 announcement add a new robot-vacuum tariff?

That proclamation directs negotiations over robotics and industrial machinery imports and requires a progress update within 180 days. It leaves tariffs and other measures as possible future remedies; it does not itself announce a new across-the-board robot-vacuum tariff rate. This is separate from FCC equipment authorization. Existing duties and model-specific import treatment still need their own checks.

What should I check before paying?

Ask the seller for the exact US SKU, stock or preorder status, shipping date, US warranty and return terms. For a newly introduced device, look for model-specific authorization or an applicable conditional approval. Our buying interpretation: a product announcement alone does not establish a lawful US launch, and a restriction headline alone is not a reason to panic-buy.
